Ann Coulter Does Not Speak for Me

NEW YORK - The Center for the Advancement of Women, an independent, nonpartisan non-profit research and education institution dedicated to advocating for the advancement of women is launching a national advocacy campaign to counter the gains made in recent years by rightwing opponents of women’s rights. The “Ann Coulter Does Not Speak for Me” campaign encourages women to speak out and equips women with tools to educate other women about how to counter Ann Coulter.

The “Ann Coulter Does Not Speak for Me” campaign addresses Ann Coulter’s absurd and irresponsible attacks. The Center for the Advancement of Women offers facts and data to help the organization’s supporters and concerned activists respond to Coulter’s false and distorted claims. The centerpiece of the “Ann Coulter Does Not Speak for Me” campaign is an interactive Web site at http://action.advancewomen.org/annSays.html, where anyone can click and spin the Counter Coulter Wheel. Once the wheel lands on a topic..from 9/11 widows to the right to vote--an outrageous Ann Coulter comment appears such as, “I’m so pleased with my gender. We’re not that bright.” (FOX News Channel’s Hannity & Colmes, September 23, 2004).

Faye Wattleton, president of the Center for the Advancement of Women, refutes this particular claim citing a few facts from the National Center for Education Statistics, “Speak for yourself, Ann. Since 1976, women’s enrollment has doubled in graduate programs and tripled in first-professional programs. Also, women outnumber men among recipients of post-secondary degrees at every level except the doctoral level.”

After a few spins, the Center for the Advancement of Women encourages viewers to take action by signing a petition that says, “Ann Coulter does not speak for me.” Supporters can also speak out by posting a “sticker” on their blog or Web page and sending friends an e-card or a message about the campaign.

The Center for the Advancement of Women is launching this campaign because the organization is concerned that Ann Coulter’s repeated messages will become acceptable group think if they are left unchecked and not countered.

The Center for the Advancement of Women conducts research on the views and experiences of women from all walks of life and gives voice to women’s opinions to help them achieve their potential. As you begin your research for stories around the women’s rights movement, please consider Faye Wattleton and the Center for the Advancement of Women as an available resource.
