Women on Religion Survey
Prompted by the increasing number and visibility of faith-based organizations across the nation, we asked women to define the influence of religion in their attitudes toward the issues that most affect their lives. Our survey, The Impact of Religious Organizations on Gender Equality, measured the opinions of a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adult women.

While committed to women’s advancement, women are becoming increasingly religious and conservative on a number of social issues, including affirmative action, birth control and abortion. At the same time, women accept many of their denomination’s teachings, but discard those that do not fit with their personal needs and experiences.

Survey revealed that:

  • 53% of women thought abortion should be severly restricted or outlawed altogether; Two years prior, 45% of women held that view. This illustrates a significant shift in a short period of time.

  • Of Christian respondents, 51% of women described themselves as “born again.”

  • 73% of women support birth control education at schools, but only 44% support the availability of condoms.

  • Support for affirmative action among women is eroding, with 33% of them saying current programs should be dismantled.

  • 46% of women say it would be better for politicians to be guided by religious values.
